Victoria Crater Rocks
This image from the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity shows a rock ledge on the edge of Victoria Crater on Mars. The rover spent nearly a year inside the crater examining rock formations and taking high resolution images. Victoria crater contains two distinct layers of rock. The top layer consists of mostly loose rock followed by a layer of dense bedrock. Scientists believe the top loose layer was created by the debris from the impact that formed the crater.
