Red Soft Coral
This image of a red soft coral was taken by NOAA photographers off the coast of Micronesia near the Philippines. This species is also commonly known as a Carnation Tree Coral. Unlike the more well-known hard corals, soft corals do not have a hard calcium skeleton. Their soft bodies float freely in the ocean currents. Soft corals are found all over the world in a wide variety of colors.
