Longspined Porcupinefish
The Longspined Porcupinefish (Diodon holocanthus) gets its name from the long spines that protrude from its body when it puffs up. It is also known as a freckled porcupinefish. As a member of the porcupinefish family, it has evolved the ability to fill its body with water until it swells up like a balloon. This makes the fish too large for predators to swallow. The spines add an extra layer of protection. This species is found in ocean all over the world where it feeds on mollusks, sea urchins, hermit crabs, and other crabs.
