Squareback Anthias
The squareback anthias (Pseudanthias pleurotaenia) is known for its unique color variations. The male is pink with a lighter square marking on its side. The female, however, is yellow with a lavender underbelly. This species is also commonly known as the Squarespot, Purple Blotch Basslet, Squareblock, Square, and Mirror Anthias. It can be found throughout the western and southern Pacific Ocean. It grows to a maximum size of about 8 inches (20 centimeters) in the wild and feeds primarily on plankton.
