This image of a fire goby (Nemateleotris magnifica) was captured by photographers from NOAA. This fish is known by several other names including fire fish, fire dartfish, and red fire goby. It is a species of dartfish native to the Indian and Pacific oceans from the eastern coast of Africa to the Hawaiian Islands. It inhabits coral reefs where it can be found at depths up to 230 feet (70 meters). It is usually found just above the sea bottom where it hunts its prey of small invertebrates.
